Life changed in an instant for these young children and their grandmother when Karen died of cancer two weeks ago.

Alice had to quit her job to care for her grandchildren. She hopes they can all stay together in her apartment. The boys are quiet these days and little Jessica cries for her mother. There is no time to deal with grief because Alice is desperately trying to keep her family together. Could we help with the rent?

Before Karen died, Alice enjoyed being Grandma. Now she’s ‘Mommy’, ‘Grandma’, ‘Nurse’ and ‘Teacher’. The children need winter clothes and Jessica is growing so fast. Could we help with warm coats and hats?

They needed help and The Breadwinners Foundation was there for them.

I started The Breadwinners Foundation to help strengthen the safety net for families facing this crisis because coping with the stress of such heartbreaking loss is overwhelming and can do lasting damage. Six years later each phone call still shakes me up and brings a fresh wave of empathy; a new resolve to make a difference.

We were able to assist Alice’s family and many others because when we needed help you were there. I hope we can count on you once more through this year’s Annual Appeal.
